Stewardship – Oikonomos or Autonomos?
The stewardship committee has been meeting with Pastor John Vaught every other Monday evening and one of the first things learned was the definition of stewardship. The Biblical term "steward" comes from the Greek text:
oikonomos is translated to "steward" in our texts
oikos means "house"
nomos means "manage"
The term "steward" then means "house-manager" in the Bible (NT). In Biblical terms the house manager or steward may be a slave or an employee. The critical fact is that what the steward manages does not belong to the steward. The steward is obliged to carry out the owner’s rules or plan. For the Christian steward this means carrying out God’s plan.
The opposite of oikonomos is autonomos which means self-manage or carrying out of our own plan under our own rules. We all know that we have been entrusted by God to be good stewards of the world he has blessed us with. We each have a responsibility to manage the world according to his plan.
So what kind of stewards are we? Oikonomos or autonomos?
